Bunion treatment

A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe that forms as the joint slowly drifts out of alignment. It does not reverse on its own, but caught early, the right footwear, padding, and orthotics often keep it comfortable, and surgery is reserved for the joints that no longer respond.

What's Involved

  • Joint assessment — Examination and X-ray to measure the angle of the toe and the health of the joint.
  • Conservative care — Wider footwear, padding, spacers, and custom orthotics to take pressure off the joint.
  • Surgical correction — Realignment of the bone and joint when pain persists despite conservative care.

When to Come In

  • A painful bump — Swelling, redness, or soreness at the base of the big toe.
  • Shoes no longer fit — Pressure or rubbing on the side of the foot in everyday footwear.
  • The big toe is drifting — It angles toward or overlaps the second toe.
