Chronic ankle instability

An ankle that keeps giving way usually traces back to a sprain that healed loose, and every repeat sprain does a little more damage to the joint surface. Rebuilding the stability is what prevents arthritis later.

What's Involved

  • Stability testing — Examination of the lateral ligaments and assessment of proprioception.
  • Imaging — X-ray and ultrasound to rule out fracture and grade ligament damage.
  • Rehabilitation or repair — Bracing and balance training first, ligament reconstruction if it fails.

When to Come In

  • Repeated rolling — Turning the ankle on uneven ground or even flat surfaces.
  • A feeling of giving way — Lack of confidence on stairs, kerbs, or slopes.
  • Persistent swelling — An ankle that never fully settles between episodes.
