Limb salvage
Limb salvage
Limb salvage is coordinated care aimed at avoiding amputation when a foot is threatened by a non-healing wound, infection, or poor circulation. It works because podiatry, vascular, and diabetic care sit under one roof here rather than in three separate referrals.
What's Involved
- Wound and infection control — Debridement, offloading, and targeted treatment of the infection.
- Circulation assessment — Vascular studies to establish whether blood flow is adequate for healing.
- Revascularisation — Intervention to restore flow where it is the barrier to healing.
When to Come In
- A wound that will not close — An ulcer open for more than a few weeks.
- Signs of infection — Odour, drainage, spreading redness, or fever.
- An amputation has been recommended — A second opinion is always worth having first.
