Sesamoiditis
Sesamoiditis
The two small sesamoid bones under the big toe joint take enormous load with every push-off, and they can become inflamed or fractured. Because the area heals slowly, getting the offloading right early makes a real difference.
What's Involved
- Imaging — X-ray to distinguish inflammation from a fracture or a bipartite sesamoid.
- Offloading — Custom orthotics with a sesamoid cut-out to take the load off directly.
- Activity plan — A graded return that does not restart the injury.
When to Come In
- Pain under the big toe joint — Discomfort right at the ball of the foot.
- Worse pushing off — Pain on the toe-off phase of walking or running.
- Dancing or running — Activities that load the forefoot repeatedly.
