Dr. Muhamad Festok is a vitreoretinal surgeon whose path to eye care ran through general surgery — a background that continues to shape how he operates and how he thinks through a case. He completed a year of surgical residency at
Yale New Haven Hospital before moving into ophthalmology, and credits that training for the steadiness and problem-solving instincts he brings to the operating room.
He earned his medical degree at
Northeast Ohio Medical University after studying biology at
Birmingham-Southern College. During his ophthalmology residency at Nazareth Hospital, he served as Chief Resident, where he built the program's grand rounds and academic curriculum and established surgical wet labs in partnership with industry to give residents hands-on time with current techniques.
He completed a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine, where he served as a Clinical Instructor, leading wet labs in ocular trauma, cataract surgery, and vitrectomy. His clinical experience includes work at
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Beyond the clinic, Dr. Festok is actively involved in surgical innovation, including the design of new ophthalmic instruments. Teaching remains central to his work: he is as invested in training the next generation of eye surgeons as he is in the outcomes of the patients in front of him.
